Chiropractic at the BI-LO Center Winter Jam 2012 in Greenville, SC

Dr. Mruz at his Winter Jam "office"

2012 was the second consecutive year that I had the opportunity to provide chiropractic care to the artists performing in Winter Jam. Winter Jam is Christian music’s largest annual tour, and I was glad for an opportunity to have a part in making the Greenville show a success. I arrived at the BI-LO Center at about 2:30 in the afternoon on Friday, February 10.  I set up my chiropractic equipment in the Greenville Road Warriors weight room. Shortly after my arrival, a steady stream of artists and road crew made their way to my impromptu chiropractic office. The best part of Winter Jam 2012 was the spirit of ministry and service which was evident to me from the time I arrived back stage.  There were multiple volunteer teams which played an essential part in allowing this concert to go on. Just like Winter Jam 2011, this concert played to a full house.

Kari Jobe with Katie

I had the opportunity to meet many new artists, and my daughter Katie was able to share some time with Dara MacLean and Kari Jobe.  The group Building 429 was a great addition to the tour, and Skillet closed out the concert with an awe-inspiring pyrotechnic display.

I think the concert was best summed up by the lead singer of Building 429. Jason Roy said this about sharing God’s truth:

“We just have to focus on this moment. It’s time for us to value every second that we have and use it all for the glory of God.”

Super Bowl XLVI Giants and Patriots Chiropractic Advantage

The truth of the matter is that I didn’t have a horse in the race this Super Bowl. Because neither the Steelers or Broncos were in the game, it didn’t matter to me who would win. I watched the game to enjoy good competition between the best of the NFL. What became obvious to me while I was watching the Super Bowl at my house in Greenville, is that every team at the highest level of NFL competition has one thing in common–the team chiropractor.

In an earlier blog post about football chiropractors I referenced the Patriots and Broncos and their team chiropractors. It is not a surprise then, that the Giants have employed New Jersey chiropractor Dr. Rob DeStefano on the sidelines for over a decade. After 20 years of treating pro football players on an individual basis, Dr. DeStefano got a call  in 2002  from the Giants asking him to be their official chiropractor. “I’m just a piece of the puzzle,” he says. “The medical staff at the Giants is the best in the world, top-notch. We work together as a team on the medical side. All our egos are put aside. It’s about getting the player back on the field, however we can do that.” Just what role does Dr. DeStefano play? “I have a very specific requirement that I fulfill,” he says. “They come get me if someone has a neck or hamstring or lower back or shoulder injury. There’s a peril and a potential injury for each player,” says DeStefano. “If you’re a defensive back, it’s upper body because you’re hitting hard with your shoulders and neck. If you’re a lineman, a lot of it can be lower extremities because you’re pushing and the legs are prone to injury and hamstring issues.”

Santa Claus Is Coming To Greenville SC! Dr. Mruz Helps Out!

Santa Gets a Checkup

Every year, a jolly old elf sets out to bring joy to every little girl and boy.  One thing is for certain, Santa can’t come down with a back ache on Christmas eve!  Unfortunately, Santa has a few things working against him every year.  Consider first his age.  He’s way older than the oldest grandparents we know and this is enough of a reason for some people to have aches and pains.  What about his activity level?  Carrying large bags of packages and scooting up and down chimneys would cause even the most athletic of us to tire!  Of course, there is the matter of that desire for Christmas cookies which has resulted in Santa being shall we say, slightly overweight?  We know that age, activity and weight alone do not cause back pain.  If age caused back pain, then everyone who received an unsolicited AARP card in the mail would be instantly crippled by pain.  This simply isn’t the case.  Activity isn’t the problem either!  I personally know many people who do 100 mile bike rides and compete in triathlons who are well into their 70′s and suffer no ill effects.  What about weight?  Certainly being overweight is a liability, but consider a very heavy truck rolling down the highway.  If the front wheel is out of alignment the tire will wear out faster than all the others.  If it is in alignment, there are no problems!  The problem is not the weight, it’s the alignment.  Fix the alignment and the weight is evenly distributed without any extra wear and tear on any one tire.  I am one of thousands of chiropractors worldwide who can provide that critical alignment service. I volunteer my services to Santa, the elves, and even those overworked reindeer who must fly gracefully over hill and dale with ever expanding sacs of toys, Nintendos, Play Station IIIs, and even iPads for those who haven’t been naughty.

One of the best reasons why Santa chooses chiropractic care for his aches and pains is simply this; there are no drugs involved.  Let’s face it, would you want Santa traipsing around the globe under the influence of strong pain medications?  Just image the effect on his take offs and landings up on the roof top, click, click, crash, bang, boom!  In his business there is no room for error.  Consider the hazards of gliding down all those chimneys, and how important a sturdy back is for that one activity!

If Santa puts his faith in the care of chiropractors worldwide, and me here in Greenville, perhaps it is time for you to consider back care with Eastside Chiropractic as well!

Merry Christmas!

A Secret that Tebow and Broncos, Brady and Patriots Share

Tim Tebow of the Broncos

The phenomena that is Tim Tebow was again trending on Twitter this past weekend.  After a strong Denver start in the game against New England, the more seasoned Tom Brady and the Patriots revealed their greater experience and closed the door on a possible Denver upset.  Denver will learn from this experience, and Tim Tebow will continue to improve as an NFL quarterback.

Tom Brady of the Patriots

One little known fact is that both teams share a performance secret which has become more the rule than the exception in the modern NFL.  The secret is that both Denver and New England have a team chiropractic provider.

Dr. Michael Miller

Dr. Michael Miller is the team chiropractor to the New England Patriots.  He practices in Norwood, Massachusetts and has been working with the Patriots since 1982.

Dr. Shawn Caldwell

Dr. Shawn Caldwell is the team chiropractor to both the Broncos and the Colorado Rockies.  He has treated many world class athletes in his Wheat Ridge, Colorado office, and is also a member of the team of providers at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic of Denver.

The team chiropractic physician specializes in restoring function to the joints of the spine and extremities through conservative measures.  As a result of improved joint function players not only gain pain relief but also improved function as athletes.  This functional restoration isn’t limited to high profile athletes in the NFL.  Rather, the sports chiropractic approach is available right here in Greenville at Eastside Chiropractic.  We feature a host of therapeutic offerings which can enhance and support athletic performance, while also preventing injury.

Contact Eastside Chiropractic, and ask to schedule a consultation with Dr. David Mruz to find out more about how sports chiropractic can help you!

Should I Get An Attorney after an Automobile Accident? A Chiropractor’s Perspective

As a chiropractor, I see many automobile accident victims. Some of my patients have been in minor collisions, where there is little damage to their vehicle, and others have had their automobile declared a total loss by an insurance claims adjuster.  Many automobile accident victims wonder if they need an attorney.  In my opinion, the reality of the modern insurance system requires the help of an attorney. Typically I focus on helping automobile accident victims with whiplash, but today I want to explain how an attorney can help after an automobile accident. Continue reading

What can I do about whiplash? Car Accident Injury Self Help Tips

What is whiplash?

“Whiplash” describes what happens when the neck is suddenly and forcefully jerked, like in a car accident.  The jerking motion happens quickly, forcing the neck beyond its normal limits. The jerking is so fast that our muscles don’t have time to resist. This jerking motion results in muscle, tendon, and ligament over-stretching and sometimes even tearing.  Symptoms of a whiplash can include stiff and painful neck movements, weakness, headaches, sometimes dizziness, ear noises, TMJ or jaw pain, and a head that “feels too heavy” making it challenging to hold up. Your Self Help Guide for Osteoarthritis; Treatments that Work

There are many forms of arthritis, and each may have special treatment requirements and long term consequences. Here are some tips for dealing with osteoarthritis:

1.  Get your diagnosis of osteoarthritis confirmed.  The less common rheumatoid arthritis is a more severe condition, and is caused by a person’s own immune system attacking their body.

2.  Don’t limit treatment to pain relief only.  Try to begin a gentle exercise and stretching program.  Remember that inactivity leads to progression of osteoarthritis!

3.  Eat an anti-inflammatory diet.  Decrease saturated fats (which are found in red meat and dairy products) and increase mono and polyunsaturated fats.  Omega 3 fatty acids including Tuna oil and Krill oil are very effective anti-inflammatory agents.

4.  Heal your stomach.  If you have used over the counter and prescription NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), your stomach lining is probably irritated. NSAIDs kill some 30,000 people every year due to bleeding ulcers, and this family of oral medications have been linked to a number of other problems including heart failure.  I am not saying that these medications aren’t helpful for some conditions, but the long term use of NSAIDs are fraught with problems.  If you need to use them, do so with great caution.  Green “superfoods” can be very helpful in healing your stomach and intestines, as can the use of aloe vera juice.

5.  There are no quick fixes!  Give glucosamine a 90-day evaluation period.  Also include other ingredients in your supplement including chondroitin, MSM (methyl-sulfonyl-methane), CMO (cetyl-myristoleate), Sea Cucumber Extract, Turmeric, Boswella, Bromelain, White Willow Bark, Noto-Gin, Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, and Vitamins D and C.

6.  Posture, orthotics, and adjustments.   A balanced joint has the best opportunity for maximum performance and longevity.  Correcting your posture with specific stretches and exercises which your chiropractor can recommend goes a long way towards reducing joint stress.  Orthotics to stabilize your feet and ankles are very influential in reducing joint stress provoked by gravity.  Regular chiropractic adjustments are critical to spinal health because they reduce poor joint function which results in joint stress.

When you combine these treatments, and when the office-based treatments are performed by a skilled clinician, tremendous gains can be made with what could be a debilitating condition.

Why X-rays? Do chiropractors really need them?

I’ve been struck lately by advertisements from chiropractors who promise care without x-rays.  The unstated message is that x-rays are not necessary at all. These advertisements also suggest that chiropractors who use x-rays are just trying to make extra money by providing unnecessary services. These advertisements misrepresent the purpose of x-rays in chiropractic.

Chiropractors are wise to use x-rays as an important safety precaution and diagnostic tool in certain situations.

We see many types of patients at Eastside Chiropractic. In reality, not every patient needs to have x-rays. However, if a patient is seen for complaints relating to the spine and diagnostic tests reveal evidence of nerve irritation or compression then x-rays can suggest if chiropractic care is even appropriate.  If a doctor fails to take x-rays and misses that the patient has degenerative joint disease, osteoporosis, an actual diseased spine or a host of other challenges, then he puts his patient at great risk for injury if he treats with standard chiropractic manipulation.

Here are some examples of cases when x-rays provided important information that would affect a chiropractor’s treatment decisions:
